Interview with Chaunce Hayden

Doc: You were a frequent caller and guest of the Howard Stern show for over 17 years, then suddenly that all stopped. It has been months since you were last heard on the show. What happened?

Chaunce: Back in February of 2005, while Howard was on vacation, I received a subpoena from the Security and Exchange Commission regarding Sirius insider stock trades. At first I thought it was Sal The Stock Broker playing a joke. So I called Jason, Will, Gary and Dominic to get advice or to find out if it was joke. They all blew me off. So I faxed it to a friend who writes for the business section of the NY Post. He confirmed it was real and asked me a few questions about it. The next day Howard's face was on the cover of the paper and my days on the Howard Stern Show were over. I spent that week fielding questions from the Associated Press and a few other select media outlets. At that point it really didn't matter. I knew I was off the show and I just wanted to clear my name and also tell the world how stupid the whole thing was. I didn't even own Sirius stock and Howard and I were never friends off the air. So to me, the whole thing was ridiculous. But to Howard it was much more. I'm sure he felt I betrayed him buy sending a copy of the subpoena to the Post . In my heart I thought Howard would find the whole thing as amusing as I did. I didn't take it serious and saw it as an opportunity to add some content for the show and cause some havoc. I wish I could go back in time and do things differently. But I can't. So, my time on the Howard Stern Show is over. End of story.

I have been working on Howardshrine: The Book for months now but in order to help reach my goal of finishing this book by month's end, this will be my last blog until the Book is completed and ready to present to Howard so he can throw it in the trash. Do you know someone who is Shrine-worthy and would like to be included? Are you already in the Shrine but would like to contribute something else? A quote about the shrine? Perhaps a message to Howard? A piece of art, poem, etc? Now is the time to act. Email me at howardshrine@aol.com to make arangements to get those last few items included. Thanks to everyone who have contributed to make this project the Greatest Howard Stern Tribute of All-Time !!!!

Dan the Song Parody Man speaks on...

His education:

Haha.. I went to Devry (way before it was a University...it was just a "technical institute), and see where it got me!
But getting back to Devry... In an indirect way, that school is directly responsibble for what I am today, and the funny thing is, the most successful people I know that graduated from that dump are all in fields that had nothing to do with thier studies there, such as myself!
I went to Devry in '82, basically to get certification for electronics knowledge that I already posessed, and take advantage of their job placement (at that time, the curricilum was 2 courses...electronic technician and electronic engineering technologist. It was before the advent of desktop digital audio editing, and the focus was on componant and circuit level electronics.
I met a ton of good people there, and the student base had a decent amount of musicians and music biz people, such as roadies and techs who wanted to broaden their understanding of electronics as it related to music (even though that wasn't specifically taught there).
The indirect credit I give Devry for my current career is about as indirect as it gets. Here is the story:
I got a job right out of school working for a datacom division of Motorola actually they wanted me so bad that they persuaded me to leave school in the final trimester to make it into the next 6 week new-hire training class)
As I was leaving the bank, my final stop before getting on the highway to head for Mansfiled MA, some asshole slammed into me and totalled my car. Class was starting the next day.
I rented the cheapest car I could, and it only had an AM radio. While scanning the dial I came across 66WNBC, and it was around 3pm. I heard Howard for the first time, was blown away, and upon my return to NY, made an effort to never miss the show if I could help it.
As fate would have it, Motorola assigned me as a Site-dedicated engineer at you guesses it... NBC in NYC, supporting a system in the Network News Computer Ops center. This was during the very final days of the Stern Show at NBC.
Eventually I started sending in song parodies to the show, and the rest is history.

His role in the Pat O'Brien parodies:

I personally did all the Pat O'brien songs played on the Stern Show the day after the voicemails were publicly available. They were trickled into airplay a few at a time. Each and every song that I chose to insert the clips into seemed to me as glaringly obvious, as they were the most popular tunes that fit the theme. Although I like to be credited as the innovator, I would be a delusional moron to think that I was the only one to think that those songs would work well with the sound bytes. I had no idea that any other show played a similar song, and if it was the exact same song, not just a similar one, I assure you that it was my creation that was played on your favorite radio show. It wouldn't be the first time something I conceived ended up there one way or another.
The first song I handed in was my version of Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called". It is completely different than the one you linked (personally I like mine better, but I'm sure my mom would too simply because I'm her baby boy!)
Mine went something like this:

Chorus:
: I just called to say : I wanna fuck you
: I just called to say : Suck my cock
blah blah blah etc etc etc.

I also noticed that on the site you linked, there was one using the NIN song "closer", another song that I did, but I don't think I ever handed it in because I wasn't as pleased with it as I was with the others. This just shows what we already know, the songs people, myself included, used were pretty obvious. All songs related to phone calls, or using the recurring words in the voicemails, such as "hot" and "crazy". Pretty basic stuff with the potential to be hilarious if I think I had 6 or 7 in total that I did the first day that eventually made it into the rotation
If my memory serve me correctly, as it most often does as far as I'm not trying to recall something from my psychedelic days, The show was on break when the voicemail were made public. I immediately went to work on them and produced 8 songs:
I Just Called- Stevie Wonder
Hot Hot Hot- Buster Poindexter
Let's Go Crazy- Prince
Closer- NIN
I Wanna Rock (suck my cock)- Twisted Sister
Crazy- Aerosmith
So Into You- Atlanta Rhythm Section
I'm So Excited- Pointer Sisters
They were submitted when the show came back on live. Although I've been clearly ripped off in the past, It would be ridiculous to cry foul in this case as all of these were such obvious choices of songs to insert the clips into, as well as the fact that I was completely unaware of any other versions out there similar to mine. I'm surprised that people only did versions of some of them, and not all of them. My editing program shows the project files being created on 3/23/05. I'd venture to say that mine were aired later, since we were on break when those poignant love messages went public. Stern Fan Network and/or Marks friggin would be a good source to check the exact dates of the original airings of the songs.

His thoughts on Opie and Anthony:

Believe me, I've tried. I love to laugh, I love to be entertained. I find thier show seldom funny, seldom entertaining, and basically unlistenable. That's just my opinion. If you like it, god bless you and enjoy it. Norton's comments were the only good thing, in my humble opinion. What I heard, and I really gave it an honest shot, was a bad attempt at doing Howard's show. Quite often I heard bad versions of pages torn from Old Stern shows. If people find it entertaining, I'm happy that they have something thet they enjoy listening to. I'm also happy for people who get pleasure out of listening to chamber music, gangsta rap, and roman showers. To each his own.

KC talks about his phone call to the Show

fuck... you guys are so fucking cool... for allyou guys that wrote those kind and encouraging notes above... thank you again., I was kind of bummed after the interview was over but I had a feeling it might go that way.
After I was gone- Tom was trying to justify his safe decision and pounded it into everyone's head that I was dangerous. Im not dangerous - He thinks im like that lion that ate the fag in vegas years ago. Truth is NOBODY knew I was in rehab but Tom until he fired me. So he was full of shit. "He gave me 20 chances?" fucking liar. I sound angry- well, I am when people are two faced... exp. when they have the fucking spine to tell you they give a shit when they were too much of a coward to be honest... He suspended me from vegas for something that human resorces proved I did not do and it was easier because the other party was a woman and he was afraid of a sexual harassment charge. That's what he threw his "second son" away for....
I have let it go and I have moved on... Some times things don't work out and you have to eat shit. Im eating his shit but I dont have to fix it. Its not my responibility nor is it in my controll. I can be responsible for my actions and all I can do is steer clear of the dishonest and morally bankrupt. If you all knew the whole story (that Howard and the crew were not even told) you would see that even though I got angry and lost my cool, I took the high road... I could have revealed some things legally Tom would be fired for but I don't need to get him back. I will just wish everyone luck and hope for the best with all they do. This brought back alot of garbage and resntment for me but I again have put it to bed. I thought I would explain to you guys cause you guys have really been a source of hope and inspiration for me when I had none. Thank you again and I will allways stand by my offer.. If you guys ever come out to a show- Ill buy the first round and I would love to shake your hand and to thank you in person... (if your one of those dudes that just hate on me and say unfunny shit- the first broken bone is free.
nice! and double nice!
